Boycott Baths? What would Chief Tecopa think?

Red Rock: Lithic Liquid, Desert Stone
Jason R. Eaton

Lithic RedrockWaves are the rocks of the desert seas.
Clouds are the stones of the desert skies.
Suns are the rocks of the desert cosmos.
Souls are the stones of desert fire: Life.

Red rock sculpted, cathedral of the chambers of time -
Offerings from molten Earth
Cathedral, yes, saved for resting souls
Red Rock

Lifted toward the sky by plates clashing against plates
Like sparks leaping from meeting swords.
Wind-worn and sun weary
Rock to pebble, pebble to sand
Sands sweeping across dryscapes
Until the land becomes a sea with towering dune-waves motioning ever slowly
Stilling time while spilling time.

Water-born and sky kept
The dunes freeze as if in an eternal smile
Temple of the riches of Chronos
Bespeaking of the temporal laws of great history

Pattern fills composition
Composition solidifies form
And form is sculpted by patient forces
Inner-outer, outer-inner...
A quiet ear and an open heart can still hear the rocking of the waves
The shifting of the sands
The power of the crystal seas.

Facing the monoliths left standing, uncovered
By aeons of weather and molded
By elemental existance
Towering Redrock...We are seduced by the details
Of intricacies
The light plays color and depth
Into rich tints and tones and leaping shadow
The dramatic illusion scrambles the sight
So that one is ever trying to hold a cloud
Yet only ever grasping rain.

The challenge we are faced with:
To flow into the energy field
To see the patterns, simplify the composition
To merge with the form
As if matching mortal breath with eternal sigh.

The becoming with nature, involuting
Motioning through illusion.

Like a volcano’s cap spit off
Time and space are bulleted out of existence.
The contrast is stunning
Like Death: Designed to capture your attention.
With heart rapture on the verge of hemorrhage
It pumps fear into your being
Then vacuums it out into the nothingness it is
Leaving only awe.

And we hear only the ring
Of a bell reverberating
Far beyond the deepest silence...
Lithic with certainty and expansive
Open - A lotus blossom
These: Our souls
Through the gateway of desert rock.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

With over 300 species of plants, breathtaking vistas, and landscapes splashed with a rich and legendary color palate, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area provides a weath of recreation for rock climbers, rock hounds, photographers, hikers, and those individuals simply seeking the serenity and comfort of nature.

Down through the ages, ancient stone has been a subject of great fascination to millions of people world-wide. Red Rock Canyon, located within a thirty minute drive from Las Vegas, Nevada, is no exception.

Carved and sculpted by the desert forces of sun, wind, and brief yet extraordinarily powerful rain storms, these ancient monoliths were, at one time, sand dunes shifting across a desert sea. Indeed, there is a great sense of timelessness in the Red Rock Canyon Area... A sense of great history, guardianship, and a gentle serenity that seems to be born from just this idea of being beyond the constraints of time itself.

As if this were not enough, Red Rock offers one of the most diverse climbing environments in the world. From expert sheer, vertical cliff climbing, to gentle sloping climbs perfect for children of all ages, to moderate hiking trails, Red Rock provides the perfect recreational setting for all ages.

To reach this "cathedral saved for resting souls", simply drive westward on Charleston until the city fades off into the past, and the mountains claim the horizon.
